What is important about these teams? That is simple: competition, confidence, and experience. Many people believe that if they play on a showcase team they will get more exposure. This may hold true for certain higher level teams and for certain tournaments they attend but it is a misconception by most that this will get them recruited. Many travel programs do have highly qualified coaches who have strong networks with college coaches. Do some research on who is running the team before you commit and find out about the organization’s reputation.
High school players should find a team where you will get playing time, coaching, and compete against the best players possible. Your goal is to work hard, develop your skills, and build your network. Showcase teams tend to be where players go for finding top competition but remember....playing time is very important. Self confidence is the biggest factor to growing as a player. If a player feels good about the team he is on, he can find a new confidence level from it. But, do not get caught in a situation where you are the odd man out and end up with very little playing time and spending big bucks to travel all over the place and not play.
Finding a well respected program will lead towards finding well respected coaches that could recommend you some day to a college coach or pro scout. Be sure to add any of these coaches or scouts to your Contact List. You may go back to them later and ask for a recommendation. No matter what team it is, showcase, American Legion, school ball, travel, or any other league, remember that it is all about getting better. College coaches can find you and will come see you play if they feel you have the talent, regardless of where it is. Don't forget to refer to your network for finding out more info on the best teams to play on.
